Savariyappa Udaiyar Memorial (S.U.M.) Higher Secondary & Primary School was founded in 1963 in the historic village of Royappanpatti (Rayappanpatti), Uthamapalayam Taluk, Theni District, Tamil Nadu. Established with the noble vision of providing quality educational opportunities to students of rural and semi-urban communities, it has grown into one of the most respected academic landmarks in the region.
Named in benevolent memory of Philanthropist Savariyappa Udaiyar, the school was instituted to bring comprehensive primary, secondary, and higher secondary education to the fertile valley beneath the Western Ghats. Over the past 60+ years, S.U.M. School has nurtured thousands of graduates who are today serving with distinction as doctors, engineers, civil servants, teachers, and agricultural leaders across India and abroad.

Foundation of S.U.M. School in Royappanpatti
Established in sacred memory of M. Savariyappaudayar by Thiru M. Savarimuthu Udaiyar, Thiru M.S. Savarimuthu Udaiyar, and Thiru M.S. Singarayar to provide affordable quality education to rural youth in Cumbum Valley.
Permanent Government-Aided Recognition
Granted official minority status and permanent recognition by the Tamil Nadu State School Education Department, expanding educational grants and tuition waivers.
High School Block & Science Laboratories Inaugurated
Expanded up to Standard 10 (SSLC) with dedicated physics and chemistry practical laboratories, a spacious school library, and an expansive athletic ground.

Establishment of the government-recognized Atal Tinkering Lab for IoT, robotics, and hardware prototyping. Student teams won State 1st Prize (₹10,000) at Hackathon 2026 and consecutive laurels at Tamil Nadu Robotics League (Young Innovators Award 2024, Best Team Award 2023).
